Cast Iron Cookware is safe to use after passing by a fire in your house?
Period house recently burned my mother … Solid pine had a car in the coating of walls and ceilings. Anything that has not been consumed by fire is covered with a mixture black pine soot and cooking oil that coated the car. Cast iron is porous. It absorbs pollutants. What you need to do is make the surface is clean. That means heavy cleaning stations with a cloth. If you have a dishwasher, run through the pots several times. After that, I recommend Rust Remover jelly-like marine. Finally, rub all over with vegetable oil, let stand overnight, then wash with soap and water. This type of cleaning is a little sad because the old iron cookware is generally well-seasoned Cast, and it takes several years to do so. Methods I have described will destroy the seasoning. However, the spice is the part that could contain contaminants. To season the pan again, never use soap in it and cooking oil and rub on the inside before storage. Some people speed up the process by putting the pan oiled on a hot burner – but not hot enough to burn oil. I never go through this to save a pot, but I understand why someone would if all that were saved.
