How can I finish furniture in the style of primitive antiques?

My husband, a wonderful carpenter, will build an entertainment center that completely enclose all modern electronics, because they do not agree with my country, primitive living! I need suggestions on where find information on how to finish in the primitive style - well used and old instantly! I think I'd do a double tone - dark red to black, but I am not sure of cracking or distress finish the edges, etc. Any suggestions?
