Old Japanese Asian?

I found this thing that looks like an old Japanese lantern, but it's huge (approximately 2-3feet high) and are available in metal boxes that sit on top of it. Apparently, copper, with glass panels. In half land there and there is a compartment below. I can only imagine What it's for the life of me. I think I might have been used to heat things because there are containers that are above, but I have no idea! Any person has the slightest idea what this thing can be?? Thank you!
